The Eurasian Harvest mouse
- The harvest mouse (Micromys minutus) is a tiny rodent native to Europe and Asia.
You’ll often find it in fields of wheat and oats, reed beds, and dense ground vegetation like tall grass and hedgerows. It has reddish-brown fur with white underparts and a remarkably agile, prehensile tail that helps it climb. As the smallest rodent in Europe, an adult can weigh as little as 4 grams (0.14 oz). Its diet mainly consists of seeds and insects, though it also enjoys nectar and fruit. When it’s time to breed, it builds intricate, spherical nests woven from grass, carefully suspended above the ground on sturdy stems.
